Fiji’s top chess player Kieran Lyons is pushing for more women to participate in the sport.

Lyons became the Woman’s FIDE Master in 2005 and she started performing for Fiji since 2006.

After an exceptional performance for Fiji at the recent Chess Olympiad, Lyon wants to help promote the sport in the country.

However, the Aussie player says it wasn’t an easy start for her.


“Growing up playing chess was a bit difficult for us because even when I was in school I had a principal who told me that I was not allowed to play chess because it was is a boys sport but luckily the people who ran the sport at school stepped in and by the time I graduated with our very first female team that left to represent.

She says there isn’t a lot of popularity in the sport in the southern hemisphere, but there is growth in participation.

“I like the fact that a lot of schools where I was because I was a teacher, a lot of schools where I was, we have more and more girls who are interested and this stigma that girls can’t play is almost obsolete now, which is amazing.

The Fiji team chess players continue to impress in recent chess competitions.
