GM Antonio Banners FIDE Rated Fast On Board Chess Tournament

MANILA — 13-time Philippine Open champion Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. (Elo rapid 2426) is aiming for another chess title.

Antonio, 59, will lead the six-player cast in the two-day Fide-ranked Rapid On-Board Chess Tournament scheduled for February 28 and March 1, 2022 at the headquarters of the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) in Project 6, Quezon City.

“It’s always an honor to get the chance to play in this tough FIDE-rated fast-paced chess tournament,” said Antonio.
There, the Quezon City resident chess player will face GM Darwin Laylo (Elo rapid 2337), WGM Janelle Mae Frayna (Elo rapid 2104), IM Paulo Bersamina (Elo rapid 2286), IM Ricardo de Guzman (Elo rapid 2261) and IM Angelo Young. (Elo fast 2204).

Organized and sponsored by the Bayanihan Chess Club led by its co-founding president, Dr. Joe Balinas, Engr. Antonio Balinas and the GM Balinas family, in close cooperation with the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), coincide with the 109 birthday of Rosendo Padilla Balinas Sr.

Rosendo Sr. is Dr. Joe’s father, an engineer. Antonio and GM and Atty. Rosendo Balinas Jr.

A total pot price of 27,000 P, offers 10,000 P to the champion, the second place will receive 5,000 P while the third to the sixth will win 3,000 P each.

The Tournament Director is Bayanihan Chess Club President, NM Marlon Bernardino, while the Chief Referee is IA Reden Cruz.-Marlon Bernardino-
