Ice Wolves prepare U.S. women’s hockey team for Beijing Olympics

The US women’s hockey team let KOB 4’s Ryan Laughlin skate with them in morning practice and it wasn’t easy.

“He said you really don’t pull the puck very hard – and he wanted to make dirty glove saves on you,” assistant coach Brian Pothier said.

Although their assistant coach and former NHL player Brian Pothier has jokes, coaching is serious business for women.

“I think everyone finds what’s best for him, which coaches to work with, and then when we get together it’s even more special,” said Grace Zumwinkle.

Zumwinkle plans to compete in his first Olympics in Beijing this winter – after four years at the University of Minnesota. For now, her focus is on the Ice Wolves of New Mexico.

“It will definitely be a fast paced competitive game. I think they bring a bit of physics – which will suit us ahead of the Olympics and games against Canada, ”said Zumwinkle.

The games in New Mexico are supposed to help them defend their gold medal against their number one rival: Canada.

“I think it’s super intense – brings out the two of the best teams – the physique is definitely something that stands out and just that factor of courage and competition is unmatched,” Zumwinkle said.
