HAMMOND, Louisiana – Maycie Massingill scored her first career goal as the University of Southeast Louisiana women’s soccer team tied McNeese 1-1 in their first home game in 42 days Friday night at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lady Lions (5-5-2, 3-2-2 Southland) hit first on 28e minute Massingill, a freshman, took the lead of his fellow freshman Shamoy Campbell on a nice touch striking Massingill in stride at 12 meters. Massingill did the rest, hitting him into the left back corner of the net as the Lady Lions took a 1-0 lead at halftime.

McNeese (8-3-2, 5-1-1 Southland) tied in the second half as Rachel Young scored her fourth goal of the season from the far left in the 54e minute. The two teams fought for the rest of the settlement, but the state’s rivals needed extra time.

After a relatively uneventful first overtime, the Lady Lions were on the attack and nearly won the game twice. Campbell’s shot from 20 yards passed McNeese goalkeeper Jackie Kelly and hit the crossbar in the 103rd minute.

In the last minute of the match, the seniors Megan Gordon took a corner from Claire Huston and led a shot on goal which was caught by Kelly with 48 seconds left.

“It was a good effort and a game in two halves,” said SLU head coach Chris McBride. “I thought we were really good in the first half and McNeese was really good in the second half. I thought we had the best chances in overtime but it was a good competitive game. Came and played very well the whole game. “

Next, Southeastern will face Northwestern State (5-4-3, 5-1-1 Southland) Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Strawberry Stadium.

The game will be broadcast via ESPN + with links to videos and live stats available on the Southeast Soccer Calendar page located on LionSports.Net.
