Mega Database: a year of weekly updates
Any user who has purchased a Mega Database in the past few years will most likely know that there is an update subscription that comes with the purchase, but a surprisingly small number actually know how to use it, let alone how to renew it. .
What is update service?
A curious conversation with a CEO recently saw a strange turn of events. The topic was about training with ChessBase, and when asked if his database was up to date, he replied that it was because he regularly downloads games from other sites. When asked why he didn’t use ChessBase’s built-in update service that came with his copy, he admitted that he didn’t know much about it.
Let’s be clear: when it comes to high quality games, covering all tournaments, whether live, online or via correspondence, the update service leaves nothing to be desired from any source or conjunction of sources. It’s a professional service where all the games are put together, but more than that, it also standardizes all the player names, event names, dates, cross tables, etc.
However, unlike having to thoroughly check external sources, download them, add them, and possibly run a deduplication check, it only requires a few clicks in ChessBase, whether it’s ChessBase 10 or ChessBase 16.
How to use it
Needless to say, you will need two essential parts: a copy of the ChessBase program and a copy of Mega Database 2021. You can use an older copy of Mega such as Mega 2020, but then you will need to purchase a renewal update. . More on that below.
If you have purchased Mega Database but have not used the service, you will need to activate it first. First go to the Shop page (or check the box of your DVD) and get the serial number with which it comes. This series is not about installing Mega, which does not require such a procedure, but updating the database.
Then in ChessBase we will use v16 as a reference in this article, at the bottom left click on Update Games.
It will cause a weird blur effect when it opens the new update window (for some reason I’m still thinking of a sci-fi movie that changes dimensions or whatever) and then you’ll be presented with a large window each. year. what subscriptions you have, what weekly games you have and haven’t downloaded, and a description of what each week contains. Suffice it to say, it averages over 5,000 games.
The first thing to do is make sure you are logged in.
Then click on Activate subscription to open the entry panel for the serial number of your subscription.
Advice – If you copy the serial number to the clipboard before opening this pane, then when you open it, the serial number will be entered automatically.
They’ll know what year they’re for, so you don’t need to tell them what they’re for. Once done, you should now see the year you wanted to update now enabled.
So now you have all these weekly parts that say “Not loaded”, right? Should you highlight them all and press Download Selected Entries?
You could, but even simpler, just hit the top left button “Download Games” and it will take care of the rest! Once done, you can shut it down and enjoy your fully updated database.
Suppose you have Mega 2020 and you don’t want to buy a brand new Mega 2021 no matter how attractive it is. You have two options.
The first is to simply purchase the upgrade from Mega 2020 to Mega 2021. It will cost 69 euros and bring all new games, including commented games from ChessBase Magazine, new playerbase entries, as well as a updated subscription to the update service. .
Frankly, this is the best choice, but if you really have no interest and just want the update service, you can instead buy a renewal of the update service and pay only 59 euros. . This is the standalone tariff, so paying the extra 10 euros for the rest of the updates seems like a better deal.
Anyway, from now on all you have to do is click on Download Games like above and have some coffee or tea like it does the rest.
Good game of chess and good friends!
